The Barron Park Donkeys have been well and truly loved by generations of children and adults since 1936. As June Fleming, previous City Manager, once pointed out, they could be considered to be the "sacred" donkeys of Palo Alto.
Our present two donkeys are a miniature, named Perry (Pericles - born 1994)) and a standard, Miner 49er (born 1984), who answers to both Niner and Miner.
Perry was the model for Shrek's donkey in the movie, but more about that later.
Their official owner is ACTERRA (the Palo Alto Donkey Project), who graciously provides insurance and tax deductibility of donations collected to cover the cost of food and farrier and vet bills.
A volunteer group of Donkey handlers provides all the necessary care, feeding, etc.
Until Bol Park was bought under a bond issue by the residents of Barron Park, it was better known as the Donkey Pasture. The present "Donkey Pasture" land is privately owned by two families. The back section, with its beautiful 300 to 500 year old oak tree on the edge of what used to be a Puichon Indian Village, belongs to the Klimp Family. Whereas the front section, with its familiar gate with the donkeys names on it, belongs to James Witt.
Other important people in the donkeys lives are their farrier, Clyde Farmer, and their Vet, Dr. Garry Hanes (who has a donkey of his own).
